Carbohydrates provide essential energy, but overconsumption can lead to fat accumulation and health problems.
- Daily Energy Needs: Caloric requirements vary based on factors like age, weight, height, and activity level. For instance, a 35-year-old man weighing 70 kg with a height of 170 cm requires around 2000 calories daily.
- Fat Accumulation: The body can store only 500–600 grams of glycogen. Excess glucose converts to fat, stored initially in adipose tissue under the skin and later around organs as visceral fat, which is more harmful.
- Modern Challenges: Excessive fat storage is linked to lifestyle diseases due to reduced physical activity and increased caloric intake in modern society. Moderating carbohydrate intake can prevent obesity and related conditions.
Different types of carbohydrates, like fiber, have specific health benefits that we will discuss in the next post.
